Hinton Martell Village Hall

Hinton Martell Village Hall

Hinton Martell Village Hall is a vibrant social centre in the heart of Hinton Martell, servicing and enhancing the lives of our residents.

The Hall is now open for bookings, following extensive works on the roof, and repair and re-decoration of the interior.  Please spread the word that we have two great rooms which can be used separately or together - ideal spaces for exercise classes, meetings, clubs, parties etc.  The Hall benefits from very reliable Wi-Fi connected via Fibre broadband.  If you would like to view the Hall prior to making your booking, please message Sue Dawson on 07476 020522 and if you are ready to make your booking, please contact Jerry Trow: hmbookings@outlook.com

Please take a look at the photos showing the progress of the building work on the 'Preservation Project' page of this website.

The Defibrillator

The Defibrillator is kept in the porch of the Village Hall.  Instructions on its use are clearly marked on the casing.  A Rota of its upkeep is published monthly in Village Voices.
Any information about joining the rota or about the Defibrillator please contact Jenny Carrington on 01258 840265.

The Village Hall

The Village Hall stands next to the Church at the head of the Village and was originally built to be the village school, with a small attached house for the teacher (this is now in private hands). The Village Hall is an important community hub in the village, holding regular events, including Artsreach concerts and it is also available for hire by groups and individuals.
There are two main rooms available at the hall, which can be separated, or used together in an 'L' shaped format. Behind the smaller room is a kitchen area complete with cooking facilities, a kettle and microwave oven. There are Gents and Ladies' toilets at the back of hall.
In 2019, the villagers raised money for a defibrillator, which can be found in the porch of the Village Hall. The ongoing checking and maintenance is done by members of the community.

The History of the Hall

The building is historically important as one of the few remaining rural Shaftesbury Schools. The School in Hinton Martell closed in 1974 and on the orders of Salisbury Diocesan Council of Education the School with two classrooms was put up for sale. The villagers, led by Mr. Mike Collins, chairman of the hall committee, worked hard to raise funds to buy the building, with the intention of renovating it and bringing it back into use as a Village & Church hall. Eventually, the 400 voters in Hinton Martell raised £1,300. Other money came from bank loans raised by villagers and a £1,000 interest-free loan came from a well-wisher. The winning bid of £5,400 was made at a Bournemouth auction in 1977.
In a village which had lost its shop and sub-post office, the hall was seen as a valuable asset to maintain a community spirit and indeed, the Silver Jubilee celebrations were held in the hall that year. Since that time, the hall has been a vital community hub, providing much needed support for the residents of both Hinton Martell and Uppington.
